What Does a Brailist Do?

A Brailist helps make education accessible for learners who are blind or visually impaired. Instead of teaching in the traditional sense, you’ll prepare Braille learning materials, convert textbooks and examination papers, and help learners use specialised learning equipment.

This role combines education support, technology, and communication, making it one of the most specialised support positions within Public Special Schools.

Your Main Responsibilities

Depending on your assigned school, your duties may include:

Converting textbooks, worksheets, and classroom material into Braille.
Preparing Braille examination papers.
Producing accessible learning resources.
Training learners to use Braille equipment and assistive devices.
Supporting learners with Refreshable Braille machines and magnifiers.
Participating in Braille testing programmes.
Working closely with teachers to prepare learning materials.
Ensuring Braille documents are accurate before distribution.

Minimum Requirements

Grade 12 (Matric) or an equivalent qualification.
